Positive Traits Of Quality Cavachon Breeders

By Sandra Lewis

Though very difficult to create and not easy to find, Cavachons are one of the most highly sought after designer breeds. They are the result of mixing a purebred Cavalier King Charles Spaniel with a full blooded Bichon Frise, or two perfect first generation specimen of this breed from totally unrelated bloodlines. As they are not cheap to purchase, interested owners should only consider using Cavachon breeders who meet certain criteria.

The AKC does not officially recognize this breed as it is actually a hybrid, so there is no officially recommended list of reliable providers. The best recommendations generally tend to come from other people who choose to own Cavachons. Regardless, there are certain factors that can make a breeder of higher quality than others.

One thing to take into consideration is that it can be quite difficult to tell a breeder's quality by a website. The best option would be to pay a personal visit to the facility. This provides an opportunity to see the conditions in which the dogs are housed, how they are socialized, fed, exercised, and bred, first hand and to ask any questions face to face.

One of the first things to check is that they only deal in one type of dog and do not mass produce litters. This would amount to running a puppy farm and most likely very poor treatment of the dogs used for breeding. The females need to have adequate healing time between pregnancies and they should be of proper age.

The cleanliness of the location is a matter that deserves attention. All feces and waste need to be removed, bedding should be clean and comfortable, and the dogs healthy, happy, groomed, and socialized. The animals require space and opportunity to exercise and play without spending most of their time in confined areas or kennels.

If the breeder is respectable, they will not hesitate to offer a health guarantee for all pups. Although certain conditions are common in the breed, provisions should be made in case any genetic defects are later discovered. New owners need to make sure to obtain all vet records, particularly concerning procedures such as vaccinations and deworming.

Expect a responsible breeder to take a personal interest in potential owners of the puppies produced in their litters. Concerned facilities will take steps to educate interested parties on breed specifics, expectations, general behaviors, grooming requirements, health concerns, socialization, attention issues, obedience training, and neutering or spaying. Factors like lifestyle, other pets, and small children are also likely to be discussed.

It will greatly benefit a prospective owner to demand copies of each parent dog's lineage papers as verification of their pure bloodlines. They should also take the initiative to learn all they can about the breed beforehand to feel confident that the animal's characteristics will be compatible with the way the person lives. It is most important that anyone thinking of buying a puppy feel comfortable asking any and all questions that they might have.
