Blood Pressure Medication Brought Into Question.

By Mercy Tolve

Health markers such as high cholesterol, being overweight, having diabetes, smoking, being stressed out, being inactive or having high blood pressure(BP) are all signs (indicators) that you're at risk of developing problems with your heart and brain later on in life.

There are many aspects of blood pressure medications to consider for treating the condition. While your doctor is the one who will decide the treatment, you should have some knowledge about the various medications.

To me they are like a time bomb's waiting to go bang or a train which is destined to crash. If you only suffer from one problem from the list of indicators, and all the others are fine then you are pretty low risk.

While most people treated for blood pressure don't need other medications for another medical condition, some do. When taking more than one blood pressure medication, it's important to make sure those medications would not conflict with one another other. Also, let your doctor know what other medications you are taking before he prescribes a particular one for you. If you have high blood pressure and have no other ailments, the doctor will more than likely prescribe a blood pressure medication such as thiazide-type diuretics. This medication suits those without other medical problems.

There are mainly three types of Diuretics available in the market. One of the first choices among the three is usually a thiazide diuretic. Thiazide diuretics are chosen over the other two as they usually have fewer side effects as compared. Moreover, they are able to prevent other conditions such as stroke and heart failure to a certain extent. High blood pressure can often result in such undesirable conditions.

This is what lead me to writing this article, a couple of quotes, from a Doctor. "I've been aware for some time that salt reduction (vigorously promoted by most Governments and relevant health agencies) doesn't appear to have any miraculous beneficial effects(on BP), but what about drugs for blood pressure so-called antihypertensives? Do these medications deliver on their promise?"

Before we go any further with the controversial side of things let's get familiar with the basics of blood pressure.Blood pressure medication effectiveness would not have been questioned 10-15 years ago.

As with any blood pressure medication, side effects can occur. They include, but are not limited to, increased need to urinate, difficulty sleeping and dizziness. Other side effects can be some sexual dysfunction in men, nasal stuffiness or headaches.

High BP which is often referred to as hypertension is defined as a persistently elevated pressure of blood within the arteries. Blood pressure is the force of blood which is pushed around the body and the blood vessel walls.
