Tumor Research & Connections To Baseball

By Rob Sutter

Tumor research is an important subject, to be certain, but I never would have correlated it to baseball. That is, however, until recently when news of Darren Daulton being diagnosed had come to light. While this story about the retired Phillies catcher is an unfortunate one, I did not think about just how many of these cases actually existed within the sport. To say that this kind of story is worthy of attention is an understatement, since it has to be wondered whether or not these cases are connected.

TIME.com posted a piece on the matter and it was learned that Daulton had glioblastoma, the most aggressive condition that can be seen in the realm of tumor research. I'm sure that many authorities would agree on the matter, Voices against Brain Cancer amongst them. There have been other names that were stricken with this condition in the past as well, Gary Carter and Ken Brett being a couple of several. Is it possible that their position of catcher had anything to do with it?

Steroids are some of the most commonly utilized substances in sports and baseball is one of them. Football can be considered another one of them - albeit to a somewhat smaller degree - and one of the more prominent cases has got to be with defensive lineman known as Lyle Alzado. He passed away in 1992 but it was later revealed that he had made use of anabolic steroids throughout his career. Brain lymphoma was what he had but I think that this is a point to bring up nonetheless.

I think it is difficult to predict whether these factors can be considered correlated. This is one condition which it is difficult to predict the source of. Maybe there is a possible connection to be made and we just have not been able to find out what the specifics are. What is known, though, is that work is constantly being done on the matter and that it is possible that we will find out results in the realm of research before long, which I hope is the case.

Perhaps it's all up to age and it's a condition which comes about as you become older. After all, Daulton had been retired from the Phillies for quite some time but the idea of this condition can strike many other individuals as well. The written piece said that glioblastoma impacts around 18,000 Americans each year, which is a shocking statistic to consider. Hopefully with more tumor research being done day after day, more positive results rise to the surface and they will be ones which can be utilized.
