How Cancer Awareness Can Play Into Meningioma

By Rob Sutter

Cancer awareness has been brought to a high level and I think that it has become such a great focus for a number of individuals. This has been able to help patients as they may be given more information on the matter as well as new therapies. They have been able to focus more on the specific qualities of tumors and the ability to target certain points which they possess. For example, did you know that there are certain proteins linked to these particular growths?

According to an article on Medical Xpress, there seems to be a tremendous level of focus placed on a specific protein known as NY-ESO-1. Basically, it is found in just about any meningioma, which is regarded as a common type of growth within the brain. Up until this point, though, therapies have not proven feasible in order to account for NY-ESO-1, which may be something of a problem in cancer awareness. However, the article continued on and the details are worth noting by organizations like Voices against Brain Cancer.

This isn't to say that typical methods of surgery cannot be utilized. In fact, most meningiomas are located in regions of the brain that can become better treated thanks to invasive procedures along with chemotherapy. However, the article stated that there are tumors which are higher-grade by comparison and may not be easily treated with the same methods. As a result, research is done in order to see about better methods that can be put into implementation, which is tremendous for those who are looking for better alternatives.

NY-ESO-1 is the subject that has become the focus of a National Cancer Institute study. The basis behind said study was that being able to incorporate tumors possessing NY-ESO-1 into the body. What this allows the body to do is to become better familiar with the protein type before working to attack the substance in question. This should, in theory, help those who are struggling against this condition and allow the body to become more sustainable as a result. I believe that there's potential to be seen with this procedure.

Whether or not this type of research will play into further therapies is the kind of information that we have to wait to learn about. However, I believe that there's a great deal of potential to be seen here and I can only hope that it is realized. After all, cancer awareness deserves all of the attention that it can get and individuals should become aware of what they can do in order to support efforts being done. Only then will the quality of work shoot up.
