Everything You Should Know About The Treatment For Angioedema

By Paula Barron

Angioedema usually goes away on its own but in some cases, medication is needed. There is more than one treatment for angioedema but you will have to go through the trial and error process to figure out which method works best for you. This condition is usually treated in the same way; with antihistamines and other medications that will help relieve the swelling.

Antihistamines are a common form of treatment for this condition. In most cases, this medication gets the job done the first time and no other medication is needed. This type of medication is used to help with blocking histamine. Histamine is a protein that causes your skin to swell.

Histamine is responsible for your skin swelling, which is why an antihistamine is usually prescribed. If you are not able to dedicate an ample amount of time to resting, make sure that you take an antihistamine that is for non-drowsiness. This is the only way that you will be able to function throughout the day while on this medication.

Hives are also associated with angioedema in some cases. For this situation, a antihistamine medication will need to be taken to receive any swelling and itching that may occur. If hives unfortunately keep you up during the night, you will need to take a antihistamine that is not for non-drowsiness. Here, you will need to take the old-fashioned antihistamine medication to help you get some rest.

Since everyone's body is not the same, your reaction to the medication that has been prescribed or that you have purchased will be different from several others who have taken the exact medications that you have. The side effects that you experience will reveal how your body reacts to the medication and the condition itself. If you experience extremely painful headaches and a dry mouth, these are a couple of the more frequent side effects.

Corticosteroids is yet another method of curing for this condition. This medication has the ability to block several functions of your immune system so that your skin does not swell and many of the side effects are terminated. If you decide to use this method of treatment, you will have to take a steroid that is in the form of a tablet for a minimum of three days.

As far as corticosteroids are concerned, there are several side effects that need to be acknowledged. With this form of medication, you may experience nausea, feeling tired or worn out, abdominal pain, dizziness and oral thrush may occur. Oral thrush happens when a fungal infection takes place on the inside of your mouth.

Synthetic hormones may also be prescribed in this instance. Synthetic hormones are a treatment for angioedema that happens to be hereditary. A few side effects that you may experience here include depression, high blood pressure and weight gain. Before you decide to try this method of curing, make sure that you discuss all possible options over with your doctor.
