Role Of Biotechnologies In Modern Medicine

By Peter Wilson

In almost all of socialized medicine is a practice that has to be there since time immemorial and in the modern society, it has leaned forward towards biotechnologies. This technology involves using living organisms in conducting their research and study for the purpose of making advancements in medicine production.

In the year 1953, the structure of the DNA was discovered and this became the main reason why scientists took more interest in biotechnology and started to use it for research purposes and in their private companies. Biotechnology is, however, most common in medicine for the making of antibiotics and vaccines.

The world is today being faced with a lot of threats and anyone can be exposed to infections and viruses which have now become easier to control with the use of biotechnology. It proves to be most useful to diabetics who can now easily access insulin which used to be quite a struggle to get as it came from butchered animals and diseases could be easily transmitted to humans.

In instances where children are born with genetic defects, biotechnology can be counted on to correct some of these defects through gene cure which involves a variety of methods that work even on embryos. This was first done in 1990 to a little girl born with a deficiency in ADA enzyme where the defective gene was replaced with a normal and healthier gene.

It also helps in the bulk production of medicine that has upheld to be safer, more resourceful and efficient and can also be used to cure a wide range of diseases with better outcome. It also helps in prevention any unnecessary reactions to the drugs by the resistant system which can happen when the medical products consumed are from non-human sources.

Diseases that are diagnosed while still in their earlier stages become easier to treat and the chronic ones stand at higher chances of being cured. Using basic methods diagnosis becomes almost impossible but with biotechnology detection and correction is easier and the harmful body pathogens that are detected during manifestation can be detected earlier and corrected on time.

There is also genetic testing that can be used in determining the sex of a child and also helps to screen for any carrier genes that may be present and this is a practice that has been faster and easier after the discovery of the DNA structure. This is a practice that has helped in minimizing the transfer of unwanted and harmful genes to the child.

Biotechnology is a field with many benefits and has helped in getting of criminals using DNA testing and fingerprints scanning of the assumed victims but also has some own demerits the main one being that it is very expensive method that very few will be in a position to get help from it.
