Focusing On Important Aspects Of Glioblastoma

By Rob Sutter

As an article on GEN went into detail about, glioblastoma is regarded as a serious condition seen in the human body. However, not everyone will understand just how severe it is, so it should be noted that it is the most prevalent and aggressive form of brain cancer seen. The fact that it accounts for roughly 15% of tumors seen in adults is a point that is hard to overlook. Studies have been done in order to help on the matter and a couple of key components are worth looking into.

What is it that makes glioblastoma tumors as severe as they are, you may wonder? The report went into detail about the litany of different cell types which exist in tumors, stem cells arguably having the greatest impact of them all. These are the ones which serve in the way of cell perpetuation and growth in the long term, which is something that brings such a level of seriousness to the condition mentioned before. It is also one of the reasons for the presence of such organizations on the matter, Voices against Brain Cancer being one such name.

A group of researchers from the Montreal Neurological Institute and Hospital at McGill University published a study that involved the use of an in vivo mouse model. What this would entail would be human GBM-derived brain tumor initiating cells. It's also been said that two proteins called FOXG1 and TLE are vital for the growth of said cells as well as the expression of various genes in the body. This study has been put to use in order to see which components could serve as regulators for this particular condition.

When it comes to the methods that are commonly tied to this type of cancer, it is apparent that some will stand out more than others. Standard surgery and radiation therapy can come together, for example, but their results can vary in the long term from one patient to the next. This is just one of the reasons why elements like FOXG1 and TLE have garnered attention during this study. It's been said that they can come together in order to lower tumor activity, which means that they are that much more vital.

With such progress possessing the potential to come to the surface, I can only hope that glioblastoma studies will be helped in the long term. There are many stories to take into account and the fact that many of them are circulating on the Internet is a point that is hard to overlook. Certain components will be looked into more than others but can they work with therapies to come? From what I have seen, the element of possibility is one that is very much apparent.
